Farah Khan – Bollywood’s Pride in Dance Choreography

After watching dance sequences choreographed in movies such as KKHH, DDLJ, KKKG, can you even imagine that the person who conceived those dance moves and has been directing the biggest stars of the present times, is a person who never received any formal training in dance! Yes folks, Farah Khan the most talented dance director of Bollywood never attended any school training in dance! As a matter of fact, she had not even remotely thought or dreamed of becoming a part of Bollywood films when she was little!
Daughter of a film director of the 50s and 60s and sister of actor and dance director, Saajid Khan, Farah Khan grew up in Bollywood. Now the question at hand is how did this young lady (not at all trained in dance) turn into a film choreographer?!!! Well, it all goes back to the days when Farah was a young girl and used to watch MTV. One day Farah happened to watch Michael Jackson’s music video “Thriller”. That video instantly became the motivator and teacher for Farah. After that day, Farah began to learn dance moves and even partipated in many dance competitions. Later, she formed a dance group called “The Sphinx”. Farah says she has been taking dancing lessons from Michael Jackson, Gene Kelley and Vijaya Anand by watching their videos and movies of course!
Movies came Farah's way with Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikander. After directing Aamir Khan, Farah saw herself going up fast on the path of success in Bollywood. She has won the Filmfare Best Choreography Award five times respectively (1997 Award for Viraasat, 1998 Award for Dil Se, 2000 Award for Kaho Na Pyar Hai, 2001 Award for Dil Chahta Hai and 2003 Award for Koi Mil Gaya).

Some of Farah Khan's films as dance director are; Kaho Naa Pyaar Hai, Dil Se, Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, DDLJ, K3G, DTPH, Mohabbatein, Dil Chahta Hai, Asoka, Shakti , the Tamil films; Alai Payuthey, Kandukondain Kandukondain, and even Mira Nair's Monsoon Wedding and Vanity Fair. Her first film as a director was Main Hoon Na with Shahrukh Khan which turned out to be a big hit!

Shahrukh Kahn, Farah’s buddy, is the actor  Farah has dance directed the most. Farah is married to Shrish Kunder, editor of her directorial debut, Main Hoon Na. She has recently choreographed her husband's directorial debut, Jaaneman and friend Karan Johar's Kabhi Alvida na Kahna, Farhan Akhtar’s Don and Rakesh Roshan’s Krrish. Farah Khan was also the pro to train Pop Singer Shakira for a Bollywood version of her hit "Hips Don't Lie" for the MTV Video Music Awards on August 31st , 2006.

Listen to some of the dance numbers directed by Farah and I am sure you will visualize in your mind and admire her innovative dance moves during each of her songs.
